Santo Domingo Historic City

Ciudad Colonial (or Zona Colonial, as most residents call it) is the city’s historic district, and a World Heritage site; founded at the end of the 15th century, it’s the oldest European settlement in the New World. Though less than two square miles in size, it is packed with some of Santo Domingo’s most noteworthy attractions, including Catedral Primada de América and the Alcázar de Colón. Relax in Parque Colón or Plaza de España, and be sure to visit the Ruins of the San Francisco Monastery on Sunday evenings for live music and dancing.
